Antique Auction: How to find a bargain

At one time if you thought about an antique auction you would picture a firm specializing in antiques, which were often displayed for viewing the day before a sale. You can even find antique auctions online. Sites like Ebay are perfect for finding great deals on antique items. Antique auction sites allow you to bid while providing pictures that you can look at so that you can see exactly what shape the item is in before you bid on it. But for the purposes of this article I am going to concentrate on the traditional offline auction houses.

An antique auction is an auction where the majority of items sold are either old or have a particular collectible value. Usually, antique auctions sell things that other collectors have offered or they sell antiques that people have left behind after they died. Whatever the reason for the items being sold , there are many great deals to be had at an antique auction.

Antique auctions should not be too hard to find.. You can check your local newspaper or call the local antique dealer. Either one of those sources should turn up an antique auction near you. In fact many country auctioneers hold special antique auctions regularly once a month. Many of the people who attend these auctions are antique dealers looking for stock but as a private buyer you are in a good position to out bid dealers because when they buy an item it has to be at a price that gives them a good profit margin when they resell it. As a collector you do not have such worries and can usually buy what you want for more than a dealer would pay for an item but at much les than he would sell it for.

One of the most exciting parts of attending a live auction is the hope that you can get a really good deal.  The price an item reaches at auction depends upon the number of interested bidders that are attending the auction. I have seen auctions packed with antique furniture dealers were non furniture items have gone for a song. Mind you equally I have seen two collectors going head to head at auction and the eventual winner has ended up paying way over the odds for the item they purchased. The best thing about an antique auction is that you can get great deals on items that have endured many, many years for sometimes pennies on the dollar. Depending on how many people are participating in the auction, you could get an antique item that’s much more expensive than what you paid for it. That’s why going to every antique auction around you can really pay off.

Auction Your Own Items

If you, too, have items that you’d like to get rid of to make room for something else, you can even offer your items to the antique auction. If you offer it to an antique house, they will likely receive a commission for allowing your item to go up for bids. If, however, you choose to auction the item off yourself, say on an auction site, you may have to pay a small fee to include it in the listing but all profits will be yours. Depending on the item, there’s no limit to what someone will pay. Sometimes, something you see as worthless can mean thousands or more to someone else.

Whether you’re a collector, a dealer or just a hobbyist, looking for that certain piece to add to your collection, try an antique auction near you. You’ll be surprised at the deals you can find and you’ll complete your set in no time. Or, if it’s you who is holding the auction, think of all the money you can make to help someone fill up their antique collection.
